ERG’s Mala Hettiarachchi Speaking at the 2024 Great Lakes Drinking Water Conference
Protecting Drinking Water from Microplastics: Source Control
Presenter: Mala Hettiarachchi, Senior Engineer, Environmental Resources Group
Microplastics (MPs) are widespread, persistent, and pervasive pollutants. MP pollution in drinking water sources such as the Great Lakes increases human exposure to small MPs that can enter human organs. Exposure to MP could cause cytotoxicity. Source water protection is crucial to eliminate human exposure to MPs via drinking water. Quantification of MP outlets such as stormwater is important in protecting source water via implementing controls at terrestrial sources.
