Lyon Township

Waterford, MI

Lyon Township has a sewage treatment and groundwater discharge facility. In 2021, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) detected perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in groundwater samples collected from four monitoring wells located downgradient of the facility. Therefore, the Lyon Township hired ERG to evaluate the potential sources of PFOA to the unconfined aquifer.

The presence of multiple sources of PFOA that could contribute to the unconfined aquifer required a thorough evaluation.

ERG has been conducting a groundwater evaluation to determine the potential sources of PFOA to the unconfined aquifer. As the first step toward evaluating the sources of PFOA to the unconfined aquifer, ERG collected groundwater samples from monitoring wells located upgradient and downgradient of the Lyon Township’s sewage treatment and groundwater discharge facility. The detection of PFOA in all groundwater samples indicated that more investigations are needed to characterize the potential sources of PFOA including the offsite sources.  Currently, ERG is in the process of evaluating the historical land use of the area that could potentially infiltrate water into the unconfined aquifer.

In addition, ERG provides consulting and field services to collect drinking water samplings for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from residential drinking water wells located downgradient of the groundwater discharge facility to ensure their water has not been impacted.
