Arbor Hills Landfill

Northville, MI

Arbor Hills Landfill experienced leachate related odor at leachate lift stations, leachate storage tanks, and sewer manholes due to elevated levels of H2S in anaerobic leachate. ERG was hired to eliminate leachate related odor.

ERG designed and implemented a leachate-related odor mitigation system at Arbor Hills Landfill. The odor mitigation was accomplished by implementing engineering controls and chemical oxidation at strategic locations. The landfill must

maintain the concentration of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) below 10 parts per million (ppm) in the compliance manhole of the municipal sewer. The odor mitigation system implemented at the landfill in August 2020 has been consistently maintaining the H2S at the compliance sewer manhole at the waterline near 0 ppm with no single permit level exceedance to date. The H2S concentration is monitored continuously by collecting data every two minutes via a sampling port located approximately one foot from the waterline.

ERG provides consulting services to Arbor Hills Landfill to develop a tiered approach to remove compatible pollutants, priority pollutants and emerging pollutants such as PFAS from the leachate. ERG provides necessary consulting services in developing and implementing wastewater treatment processes such as aeration, bioaugmentation activated sludge process, dissolved air flotation (DAF), coagulation and flocculation, chemical oxidation, adsorption to granular activated carbon, and ion exchange at an interim setting.

In addition, ERG provides consulting services in designing and implementing a longterm leachate pretreatment system that is focused on removing pollutants such as chemical oxygen demand and ammonia to comply with the requirement of the Industrial Pretreatment Programs (IPP) and remove PFAS. ERG provides compliance services to per the discharge permit.

Also, ERG conducts water quality and sediment quality evaluations of two PFAS impacted ponds due to the disposal of AFFF waste during firefighting, and other as needed services.

The Arbor Hills Landfill, an active municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill, consists of approximately 337 acres. The landfill receives about 3,000 tons of waste per day.
