Client Pipe Line Leak
Munster, IN
Background
ERG has a long relationship with this pipeline company and is one of their preferred Environmental Consultants for emergency response and remediation.
The Challenge
While using the Munster, IN trail, a public citizen observed a petroleum odor and saw a possible leak near the pipeline block valve. They notified the pipeline’s operation’s control center to the suspected leak. Upon confirmation by pipeline personnel, the release was then reported to County Emergency Management and the National Response Center(NRC), The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Indiana Department of Environmental Management(IDEM), and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Association (PHMSA). The pipeline then contacted ERG for emergency response services and remediation planning. The challenge was to swiftly contain the leak, prevent further damage and provide an immediate plan for remediation.

• ERG quickly mobilized to the release location • Completed waste profile sampling for disposal of excavated material.
• Obtained land fill approval for the disposal of impacted material.
• ERG interacted with IDEM staff and many governmental jurisdictions to discuss and coordinate an expedited remedial and sampling plan.
• ERG provided guidance to the client for further excavation activities to remove the impacted soil.
• Documented environmental conditions of the spill and its clean up,
• Completed environmental verification sampling to demonstrate the success of the clean-up.
• Submitted a summary report to IDEM and requested “No Further Action” was required for clean-up of the spill.
