ERG’s Mala Hettiarachchi Presents at the 2024 Michigan Environmental Compliance Conference

Navigating the Microplastic Maze: Implications, Treatment, and Prevention

Presenter: Mala Hettiarachchi, Senior Engineer, Environmental Resource Group

Microplastics (MPs) pose significant risks in aquatic environments, like the Great Lakes, with concentrations mirroring those in major global marine pollution areas. MPs can infiltrate human organs, causing cytotoxicity. This presentation explores MP entry pathways into the environment, notably stormwater and wastewater, and highlights effective removal and treatment techniques. The role of prevention and public awareness in combating MP pollution is emphasized, advocating a multi-stakeholder approach for a comprehensive solution to this global issue.
