Mala Hettiarachchi is a senior engineer for Environmental Resources Group. She graduated from the University of Calgary in Canada in 2005 with a PhD in Civil/Environmental Engineering and is a licensed professional engineer in Michigan. Mala has specialized in environmental engineering including site assessment and remediation, sediment assessment and remediation, landfill engineering, greenhouse gas mitigation, groundwater flow and transport modeling, hydrology and hydraulics, emerging contaminants including microplastics and PFAS, and permitting. Mala has worked on research and consulting projects in multiple service areas, including superfund projects, over her 15-year career. She also has research as well as work experience in several countries including the United States, Canada, Germany, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
Mala has over 10 peer reviewed journal publications and serves as a reviewer for journals such as Waste Management since 2005. She is a current board member of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), Detroit Post. Mala is also a proud mother of two little girls and enjoys spending time with her family, exploring new places and food, hiking and biking. She has been to more than 50 countries and dreams of living in Africa. Mala loves helping the environment and has kept a disposable plastic free household for more than two years.
